. yesterday chuck hagel had a rough first day. he would like to be our next secretary of defense. his appearance was rambling. he was stapl pherg. "the new york daily news" this morning writes whatever president obama sees in chuck hagel, it was largely invisible as he faced his former colleagues. if you missed the testimony, we had it largely here on the channel yesterday. here he is tangling with john mccain over the troop surge in iraq which mr. hagel opposed. >> if you would like me to explain why -- >> i actually would like an answer. yes or no? >> i'm not going to give you a yes or no. i think it's far more complicated that, as i've said. my answer is i'll defer that judgment to history. >> i think history has already made a judgment about the surge, sir, and you're on the wrong side of it. >> do i think it is right that israel was committing a, quote, sickening slaughter as you said on the floor of the senate? >> i would like to read all of it, what i said. first, i said many, many times, senator, every nation has a right to defend itself. >> do you think a sickening slaughter

defense secretary leon panetta. as jacqueline fell reports congress is focusing on the next cia director and whether john brennan supports using drones for targeted killings. >> reporter: pam, john brennan says that drone strikes are used only against targets who plan to attack the united states. brennan told senate intelligence committee led by dianne feinstein that drone strikes are never used as retro abuse for an earlier attack against americans. he says americans deserve to learn more about the procedures and practices for drones and targeted killings. republican senators want to know if brennan would rather kill terrorists with a drone or capture them. >> i never believe it's better to kill a terrorist than detain him. we want to detain as many terrorists as possible. >> reporter: another big topic of the day information sharing. senators complain they don't share enough classified information with them while sharing too much with the media. some republicans accused brennan and the cia of offering authorized leaks to help president obama in the when i see you next in a warning com

's something to be encouraged by. we actually think the opposite. so defense spending dragged down the report. that's not getting any better. the sequestration will likely go through. inventory rebuild, i think that that is premature to expect that. there's still excess inventories in autos, like trucks, for example, and then global trade, which looks considerably fairly weak and will probably stay weak. whereas the parts of the report that were viewed as strong, capital spending but most importantly consumption are likely to be very weak in the first half of the year. we just raised taxes by $200 billion. you hear the president, he wants more tax hikes, he wants more spending cuts. we think capital spending will get better through the course of the year. but what we heard through corporate america is that the near term outlook is still pretty soft. there's parts of the report that people took encouragement from are going to get worse during the first half of the year and that we're not going to necessarily print another zero on gdp. >> everyone sees the markets rocketing on friday who called

at the gdp number, what is interesting, part of the reason why it contracted, there were cuts to defense spending. the obama administration saying this is an indication that spending cuts, what republicans calling for, don't necessarily work. the thing that is sort of looming over this mixed bag, this economy picture that we got this week, are, of course, these fiscal fights coming up on the horizon. republicans and democrats will have to deal with that. first up, the sequester which could potentially work in deeper spending cuts to defense spending, nondiscretionary spending. that's something that the white house, that congress will really have to deal with, and that's sort of first up on the list of fiscal fights in a series of them, alex, on the horizon. >> kristen welker, thank you for that. we'll see you in the best of office politics in a half an hour. >>> later on, new campaign for immigration reform. a new report suggests it may not be much of a help for the republican party which lost the hispanic vote in historic numbers in november. the story in 30 minutes or so. >>> also new
see a sharp drop in federal defense spending and big inventory swing. those are factors that caused us to have a small negative gdp growth last quarter. i think particularly the federal defense spending is a harbinger of what might happen if the sequester takes effect. the cuts that no one wants to see happen, would restrain government activity, would be harmful for the economy. we'd like to have a smarter approach to relieve the sequester. >> so finally, in your view, was that just a taste of what another sequester could be like? >> well, as you know, the sequester hasn't started. and we have made proposals to congress to eliminate the sequester. the sequester can certainly have a significant impact on the economy. what we saw in the fourth quarter gdp report was just a big effect on defense spending. >> right. >> possibly advanced planning because of sequester by private contractors and other factors going on. the sequester would also affect nondefense spending, and that could also have a significant impact op the economy. >> dr. krueger, appreciate your time on a busy day, for you a
